1) Futures brokers charge commission per contract traded. Usually somewhere between $5 and $10 per round turn per contract. On the british pound you only need to make 1 pip profit and you’ve covered your commission.
2) The spot market is not liquid it is not real. The broker makes the market. The futures market is very very thin at news time, hence the slippage.
3) I can’t mention that here sorry.

I am still at the spot market now trade the spike manually without autoclick software (I use TredetheNews newsfeed and place order manually). You are right, trade the spike is getting harder nowdays that is why I am interested with your strategies which are trade at futures market and by using autoclick software.

There are some questions:
1. Most spot forex brokerages make profit from traders, how do futures brokerages make profit?
2. Is futures market more liquid than the spot at news time?
3. What autoclick software do you recommend? Do not hesitate to mention the brand.

I coded the pivots indicator myself, you can get this and all the instructions for installing it here: http://www.traderslaboratory.com/forums/f46/globex-pivots-1537.html

The minute timer is there also. If you have any issues please post on the discussion forum on that website. The weekly pivots are incorrect on Mondays – that’s the only outstanding bug left I have to fix.

If I don’t get a trigger for the spike trade on the autoclick, then I don’t do anything. I wait 10-15 minutes to see how the market digests the report and then trade technically from then on using fibs, pivots, etc.

Straddled though it was a low key news event. Got 12 pips. Happy that it was not a dud. I should have let it run a few more pips (until it reached the next support). Maybe next time.

Had a straddle +20 -20. The Whipsaw took out both the positions! Lost around 30 pips. I should have stopped here (But…..!). But fell for the impulsive disorder and lost another 42 pips!!!! Bad. Currently I have a open long position on EUR/USD, on which I have moved the SL 10 pips above the buy price. Hopefully that moves up a long way to cover my losses before the markets close today. Oh well, never deviate from your strategy…How many times I have to say that to myself..yet..:)

You cannot trade the news off websites. Period. You can try tradethenews.com or buy a bloomberg terminal. I use autoclick software, which i’ll send you an email on

2.
I’m not trying to squeeze every single tick out of the market, I am going for a high probability trade. If it means less profit but with higher probability – so be it. I have been stopped into trades before the release came out before on noise just before the release. I therefore place the orders a little wider.

Learnt a lot from your action replay video. I had a couple of questions:

1- I always have trouble looking at the news immediately. I just check the website fxstreet.com and by the time they update the website, it is too late. Do you have any better sources for breaking news?
2- Why do you set your sell-stop or buy stop at more than 20 ticks from the current price? I try to set it + or – 10 ticks from the current prince t-1 minute. I guess you could earn a bit more if you do that, right?

I don’t straddle retail sales, I always use the autoclick software. It can be a nice trade though. I don’t find jobless claims to be worth trading very often. In fact, I don’t trade it.

I skipped the canada CPI and did the US jobless claim (on GPBUSD). US Jobless claims also did not spike enough! Glad I closed the trade manually at 0 pips when it started falling down after a mild push upwards. I beleive the deviation was not enough for fireworks (Prev 343k, Curr 339k).

Mark, What news are you looking forward next? Do you think GBP retail sales tommorow morning is worth the stradling?!

In order to put my order in, I just manually clicked my mouse on my order entry platform 5-10 seconds before. I just clicked the prices I wanted to buy and sell. Pretty simple, and no technical wizardry!

I concur about the helpfulness of your blog. Your experience is very valuable. I did exactly the same yesterday with the BOE meetings by straddling 10 ticks either side. I was waiting for the tick to go more than 30 pips before I thought I will close it manually (as the market was already priced in – I knew it could not go very high). Anyway, it started coming down and I took 5 pips profit. Not bad. Keep up the good work Keymoo!
